Welcome to MettāVerses, a community-focused venture powered by unconditional loving-kindness (mettā). Envisioned by Dr.Juewei Shi from the inspiration of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, MettāVerses is committed to helping both online and real-world communities to foster and enact loving-kindness.
What is mettā? Mettā (Pali) or maitrī (Sanskrit) is often translated as “unconditional loving kindness” or simply “kindness.” It is the gentle and friendly wish that others be well and do what needs to be done to find such wellbeing. In the Mettā Sutta, the Buddha instructs his monks to meditate on loving kindness for all living beings to be safe and happy. Mettā as a practice begins with wishing for happiness for oneself, and then extends that wish to others. In other contexts, mettā is one of the factors that motivates the bodhisattva to save all beings from suffering.
MettāVerses is a response to the global challenges we face today, from climate change and pandemics to social inequality and mental health crises. Everything we do is based on our own research on how to address these social problems. We aim to be a hub for resilient, sustainable communities that thrive on the practice of mettā, fostering an environment where every individual feels valued, connected, and empowered to contribute positively to the world.
Our mission is to:
Educate communities about how to foster and enact mettā
Share the core values of Humanistic Buddhism, specifically Loving-Kindness
Celebrate kind communities around the globe who are creating supportive, inclusive spaces, events and programs that counteract social isolation and atomisation by embracing mettā
Document kindness movements and communities
Research kindness-focused organisations and groups and how they enrich their communities
Join us in our journey to create a more compassionate and connected world through one act of loving-kindness at a time.
